The Hundred-Foot Journey Setting (In the Begining)

The Hundred-Foot Journey Setting (In the Beginning)

The Hundred-Foot Journey's setting is taken place in Bombay which is in India. In the beginning of the book, it talks about how his family journey started in a kitchen in the plains of India. The author puts great detail talking about the setting in the beginning. " My life in the kitchen, in short, starts way back with my grandfather's great hunger. And that three day ride atop the train, baking in the fierce sun, clinging for dear life as the hot iron chugged across the plains of India, was the unpromising start of my family's journey."

The author adds more detail about the city of Bombay. It gives almost background information about the city. "To understand the Bombay from where I come, you must go to Victoria Terminus at rush hour. It is the very essence of Indian life. Coaches are split between men and women, and commuters literally hang from the windows... The trains were so crowded there isn't even room..." This information shows how Bombay is a busy place and very highly populated with people. The transportation systems in the city are really important and busy.

The Hundred-Foot Journey Word Choice

I have started the Hundred- Foot Journey and the first thing that I noticed as I was reading the first several pages that there is a lot of show not tell. What that means is the author isn't really telling what is happening, what it is and etc.. The author is showing by using really good details to describe. An example of this was actually on the first page and the main character Hassan Haij was describing his destiny, "I suspect my destiny was written from the very start, for my first sensation of life was the smell of machi ka salan, a spicy fish curry, rising through the floorboards to the cot in my parents' room above the restaurant," (pg.1). This sentence shows how the smell  of the fish curry went through the floorboards to the cot in his parents room above the restaurant. The author didn't just say that the smell was everywhere.  With a lot of description in this book, I can actually visualize what is happening in the story. It is almost as if I can hear, smell, taste or feel what is being described. The descriptions help the book become more interesting. The Hundred-Foot Journey so far is a very good book. The descriptive details help the book make it more interesting to read and helps me visualize what's happening.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

The Hundred-Foot Journey

I have abandon my previous book, The Kite Runner and I am going to start the Hundred-Foot Journey By: Richard C. Morais. The book is about this Indian kid who is learning how to cook in India and when tragedy pushes his family out of India he and his family land up in a small village in the French Alps. The family opens an Indian restaurant opposite of a famous French chef Madame Mallory.

When I bought this book on my device, the reviews looked really good. Most people reviewed this book all 5 stars. The editorial reviews include one from the New York Times Book Review said,
"The novel’s charm lies in its improbability: it’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ meets ‘Ratatouille." Another editorial review is from the author of Chocolat- Joanne Harris and she said that the Hundred-Foot Journey "has great charm and is colorfully written, sensual and evocative.” All of these reviews seem great and very interesting. The book itself seems really interesting and I cant wait to read it!

The Kite Runner Vocabulary

    The Kite Runner Vocabulary

The Kite Runner's setting is in the Middle East and the vocabulary that the author uses is Arabic words. The author uses Arabic words to engrave the Arabic culture into the book. Some examples of words that the author uses are on pg. 11 it says, " If the story had been about anyone else, it would have been dismissed as laaf, that Afghan tendency to exaggerate- sadly, almost a national affliction..." On pg. 23 it says, " We talked about whatever film we had just seen and walked amid the bustling crowds of bazarris. Bazarris means a bustling of crowds.

All of these words adds a great touch to this book. You get to learn new words of the Arabic language and you get to learn also the Arabic culture in this book. The Kite Runner is a very cultural oriented book which means it has lots of the Arabic culture and practices in them.

The Kite Runner

    The Kite Runner

I just started The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The book takes place in Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy that is present. This book is about two boys who currently live in Kabul who live in the same household but they both come and grow from different worlds. Amir is a son of a wealthy man and Hassan is the son of Amir's fathers servant. Hassan is a Hazara which is a member of a shunned ethnic minority. Amir and his father flee the country to California while the Soviets invade and Amir wants to escape his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of his best friend Hassan behind him.
.
I chose this book because this book because this sounds like a very interesting book. The book is mostly about friendship and bonds between family members. It seems like a very powerful book to the inside. When I read the synopsis, the book and the characters were sounding very interesting to me. The Kite Runner is historical fiction and I do have an interest to historical fiction. I like to read historical fiction because it has mystery and suspense. I think this book will be really good and enjoyable.

The central theme in The Death of Bees is family secrets. Marnie and Nelly have to keep a secret about their parents being dead from the outside world. Throughout the book, the secret is tougher to keep it a secret because their neighbor and people in the town keep asking Marnie and Nelly where are your parents.
